Shrink bands come in different sizes and models. The regular ‘’band model’’ is a clear small band that is used to wrap around the lid of a container to keep it from being opened. These products are also referred to as ‘’Cut Bands’’. The larger ‘’sleeve model’’ usually has a more colorful look and is wrapped around the body of the bottle itself for decoration and branding. These colorful and large shrink bands can often be found on water bottles, beverage bottles, and shampoo bottles.

Shrink bands are made of a very thin yet durable sleeve of plastic. The type of plastic used for wrap bands usually is PVC. The reason why PVC is used lies in the fact that it reacts to heat in a proper way. This means that it shrinks when heat is applied. Additionally, PVC is very simple to work with because it’s durable, and, most importantly, it’s extremely cheap. Especially the latter plays an important role when it comes to disposable wrapping materials such as supply shrink bands for plastic bottles, glass vials, jars, and metal tins.

Shrink Preforms: this type is similar to the original model mentioned above. Hereby you can think for instance about pre-made salads or fruit that comes in a large plastic cup. Preforms are attached to the product in a similar way as the original shrink bands. 1) Select the correct size: the first thing you’ll have to do is make sure your shrink wrap has to correct size. It is, however, not very important that you purchase your sleeves in the exact size that you’re looking for. Even if the shrink bands are too large, you can always adjust the size manually by cutting them shorter. More information on how to select the right size can be found in the next chapter.

2) Attach the band: simply slide the shrink band over the dispensing caps of your bottle, jar, container, or tin. When doing so, it is important to leave enough room at the top for the band to form itself around the lid.

3) Apply heat: now the shrink band is in the right position, all you have to do is put on the heat with a heat gun or hair drying. When doing so, you’ll realize that your sleeve will shrink and form itself tightly around your bottle when used as bottle seals or around your other type of packaging. After the shrink bands have shrunk, they treat you to a perfectly fit tamper-evident wrapping.

When applying your shrink bands, it is important that you choose the right size. Especially the width of your sleeve is very important. Luckily, it is not difficult to find out what is the right size shrink sleeve you’re looking for. To find out which dimensions you need, simply measure the diameter of the widest part including flanges, covers, flares, and neck. As a reference, please see Figure 1 and Figure 2 below. Figure 3 shows an example of incorrect measurement.

Please note: In order to create tamper-evident packaging, your shrink bands should cover both the bottle cap and bottleneck.

One important issue to keep in mind is the fact that shrink bands cannot be used on straight bottles that do not have a lip or neck. If your bottle features a straight body like a cylinder in which the cap and body feature the same thickness, it can be removed without damaging it. As of such, the wrapping won’t have resistance against tampering. Additionally, shrink bands cannot be used directly on sprayers and pump bottles unless they feature an additional plastic cap around their dispensing mechanism. The second thing to keep in mind is that you have to use an even and consistent heat source when shrinking your bands. If you use too much, there is the chance that your shrink band will melt or break. If you use too less, the sleeve won’t shrink properly. As a result, it won’t have a tight fit and can be removed without damaging it. Always make sure you use the correct temperature and a consistent source of heat and double check if the shrink band has been attached in a proper and tight way.
