What is PET plastic?

PET (short for Polyethylene Terephthalate) is a type of plastic we’re all dealing with every day. Just like most other plastics, PET is made from petroleum hydrocarbons which comes by through a reaction between terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol.

PET is grouped in the first group (#1) when talking about resin Identification Codes. If you are curious about whether your bottle has been made from PET, you can simply turn it upside down and have a look at its bottom or sometimes its backside. All plastic wrappings should have certain recycling (identification) codes engraved. Simply look for the #1 code which can be recognized as the number 1 surrounded by a group of ‘’chasing arrows’’. How are plastic bottles made?

To produce plastic bottles, the first thing you’ll need is the PET which naturally is the main component. After this, you can start with the first stop in bottle manufacturing which is called ‘’stretch blow molding’’. In this process, the PET is heated up and placed in a mold. Inside the mold, it will be formed into a long and thin tube. This thin PET tube is what we call a parison. After the parison has been formed, it is transferred into a second mold which has the shape of a bottle. Once in place, a thin steel rod (also known as a mandrel) is slid inside the parison. The mandrel will then fill up the parison with high pressurized air. This is where the process of ‘’stretch blow molding’’ really begins. The combination of heat and applied pressure forces the parison to adapt the shape of the mold - thus creating a bottle.

While the bottle is created by stretch blow molding, a separate piece of plastic is added to the bottom of the newly formed bottle. This is done to make sure the bottom of each bottle is tough and perfectly flat.

Now that a new bottle has been formed, it has to cool down rapidly. This is necessary to ensure that it is set properly. Luckily, there are numerous direct and indirect ways to cool down the mold along with the bottle in a fast and efficient manner. These cooling methods include using pressurized air or carbon dioxide that is directly applied to the mold and plastic.

After they have completely cooled down and set, they can be safely removed from the mold. Large bottle manufacturers who use a continuous molding process now have to separate the newly formed bottles by cutting away the plastic in between them. After they have been taken off their molds and the access plastic is removed, they are ready to be shipped to the next company in line. Here they will be filled up with a product, a lid is added, and then it is distributed to our customers and end-users around the world.
